Just browsing through blogs today, I found a lovely Designer Garment COPIED by Amanda of Sew Deputy, which fit the #DESIGNINDECEMBER theme exactly. I just begged Amanda to let me show it to you. So if you haven’t seen it yet, here it is… Amanda found a Chloe Metallic Jacquard dress and had to have it for her staff Christmas party.

Now for some progress on my DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER outfit. I have my wide pants hemmed and ready to go. I have decided on a length, but let’s not talk about that just now. The other half of my DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER outfit is the jacket, just like this one designed by Marina Hoermanseder.
I did find the jacket fabric in my local shop a while ago. Believe it or not, it is a “Home Decor End” and cost me only $9.14 plus tax – beat that Marina Hoermanseder! All in all, this outfit is turning out to be quite the deal:
Home Decor End (content unknown) $9.14; jacket lining (100% polyester) $4.95; Navy blue skirt (80% polyester, 15% rayon, 5% lycra) $15.96; and oh yes and the jacket closure – which I will also keep as a secret for now.
Too many secrets!
It doesn’t look like Marina’s jacket has princess seams and it is rather boxy. No problem, I made a few alterations of my pattern, Vogue V7975, view C seemed the best choice.
I straightened out the side seams a bit for a boxier look.
Then I worked on my princess seams, front and back. (Hover over the lower right corner of the photos for commentary.)
I serged all my pieces because bits of the woven material were flying all over the place, worse than cat hair!
Then I took a good look at my jacket. It’s a good thing I was making a short jacket, and not a long one, because I cut out the long pattern pieces for the back and the short pattern pieces for the front! My inattention was not a problem this time and I just trimmed off the back pieces to the correct length.
Next, easing in the sleeves. (Why do I have an urge to sing “Bringing in the Sheaves” after saying that sentence?) After gathering the sleeve head, I always use a TON of pins to line up my marks and notches – which were very difficult to mark and see with this woven fabric. When I sew the sleeve in I have the gathered sleeve on top. I like to go slow and feel the fabric feed under the needle as flat as possible.

I have finished these same steps with my lining fabric and after hand sewing in the shoulder pads and one last check for fit, etc. in the fashion fabric and the lining, and perhaps one more press, I will “bag” the lining, sew on the jacket closure and be done! I’ll have my DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER outfit ready for you next post. Looks like I am going to make it in “just under the wire”!

Your jackets going to be fabulous!!
Setting in sleeves and stuff…… Don’t you use Janet Prays method that was in the Express Jacket Crafty class? I pin at the start and finish of the seam, and at the notches and shoulder seam, and that’s it. And always remember to remove my walking foot as the easing with the feed dogs won’t work properly if you don’t. It works just as well in princess seams too. Just have the biggest seam on the bottom. 😀

Yes! I apparently have gone totally brain dead with this project! Thanks for the reminder! Apparently with the princess seam I had the biggest seam at the bottom and with the sleeve I reverted to my old ways!
Love how this outfit is coming together. Waiting to see the secret jacket closure! (The harder I try to insert a different song in my head, the more stubbornly the sheaves remain…) And Amanda’s dress is absolutely gorgeous, too!

I wish you hadn’t mentioned that song, it is indeed a difficult one to get out your head!! I used to watch the machinists feed the sleeve head through with the points of their little scissors! Its a really good way to do it once mastered. Looking forward to seeing the finished outfit.
Yes, there was one point when I flattened out a bump with my seam gauge. I’ve learned not to put my fingers too close after sewing my thumb long ago! Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to you!
