My “little trip”.

Yes, I went on a little trip – let me tell you how it was… IT WAS A BLAST!!

I went to a fashion show, specifically Vancouver Fashion Week.  My first!  My sister J.A.M. Joanna’s Artistic Muse entered their art contest and the prize was two tickets to Vancouver Fashion Week for the night of March 15th.  Thank you Sis for sharing!

We got there early enough to see the prep work and get great second row seats.

My sister told me not to use this shot… 😉 sorry, I just couldn’t resist!

Almost first in line!  Notice the DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER outfit?

I was amazed at the different designs presented, some quite practical and some … ahem … NOT!  And the fabrics!  If I could get my hands on their fabric suppliers!  Let me show you…  (If you click on the designer’s name you will get a brief bio of them.)

The first designer was Allison Wonderland.  I loved her designs.  There were quite a few of her garments I could easily imagine myself wearing.

My sister loves stripes!  Such a casual and comfortable fabric.  @shopwonderland

Next was Sofia, born and raised in Chile, relocated to Vancouver, B.C. Canada.  More designs that could make me happy, with a lower hem of course!

Nice to see the high – low hem still trendy, although mine might be a little bit lower all around! @sofia_ms

I love colour blocking – similar to a top I have recently made! @sofia_ms

Shelley Klassen of Blushing Boutique, a dress shop in Vancouver, B.C. Canada, was next up.  I loved her designs.  I want them all!

Katherine Tessier was another favourite of mine.  I want the striped jacket and the colour blocked two tone grey dress… NOW!

Ainee Suhaidi  had me watching her fabric choices the whole time.  Look at the bomber jacket – it was the most beautiful gold brocade I have ever seen.  Gotta find that fabric!

Now Gabrielab certainly caught my attention!  What can I say…

… such bright and bold colours!

Grace C.Y. Lam‘s Beethoven Collection, evening wear, must have required many bolts of fine fabric.

Perle was then quite a contrast with the soft colours that were used.  I love the first two on the right – the pinkish dress and the white jacket with brown trim!

Have you been inspired?  I am amazed at the creativity of the designers we saw  during our night at Vancouver Fashion Week.  I am inspired to imitate my favourites – perhaps for DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER!  I shall have to start hunting for suitable fabrics right away.

I only wish I could reach a level where, like these designers, not only do I use a pattern block or a dress form and fabric and thread, but also get original designs from my surroundings and other visual cues, whether it is the clothes I see on others or the colours and textures around me.  Needless to say the evening was a feast for my imagination!

I’ll leave you with a few videos I took…

Have you spotted a garment that looks like a pattern or a fabric you have?  Have you found a garment that inspires you to join DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER this year?  I’m sure I have.

I want to say “thank you” to my Sis J.A.M. Joanna’s Artistic Muse for taking me along, and also for taking all my photos.  (I was able to take video, but my camera couldn’t take decent photos with the spotlights angled my way.)

Happy Sewing!

  1. FABULOUS – and CONGRATULATIONS to your Sis!!!
Now have to watch all the videos on full screen & think . . .
Thanks to you both for these wonderful pictures!

    1. You’re welcome! The videos aren’t long. By that time the models were dashing by! We were like the paparazzi in awe of clothes 😎

  2. Sounds like you had a fabulous day and got plenty of ideas to inspire you. Definitely one to be remembered for a long time.

    1. It was a lot of fun! I shall have to do it again someday!

  3. Wow and wow! Thanks for sharing this. I have never thought of going to a Fasion show but you have shown me its not all silly impractical Zoolander stuff i associated with fashion week. I lov the bold outfits.

    1. You’re welcome! I thought it would be all “Zoolander” too. (Well put BTW). I was pleasantly surprised by the variety!

  4. This was a blast wasn’t it? I found it inspiring that people are out there pursuing their passion. The more people I’ve told about VFW the more people want to go. I have a feeling the next fashion show in the Fall (I believe Spring/Summer), we may have our own entourage. Even if some designs weren’t my taste, those designers, that’s their creation and they are putting themselves out there to be judged. That takes courage. Great coverage of the event Linda. 😊👍

    1. Thank you! The designers were quite happy when they followed their creations out on the runway weren’t they! All that clapping! Like movie stars!

  5. This is so cool! What an experience. I’ve watched runway shows online, but I never really thought about attending a show. It looks like you had a blast!

    1. We did! There is such energy in person!

  6. Well I’m inspired! What a lovely sister to take you and there are some really wearable and covetable clothes in this little lot. Thank you for sharing.

    1. You’re welcome! It was so fun, I just had to share!

  7. A big congrats to the prize winner! And you obviously had a fab night out. You wore you’re own inspired outfit and it is a one off, so you already have the mindset of someone who designs. Lots of designers take their inspiration from what happens on the catwalks. I’m with you 100% on wanting to get your hands on the fabrics.
I’ve been to yearly college fashion shows, you probably have local ones where you live, give them a visit too, they can be excellent!!

    1. We did have a wonderful time. Thank you. I never thought of the local college shows. It would be interesting to see more. A friend of mine commented: Oh so it was just a local thing, no big names? No Stella McCartney wasn’t there, but there were designers from all over the world, beginners or not, perhaps McCartneys of the future! Whether a beginner or experienced it is a special talent to create something from nothing and then to have the confidence to put it out there! I was impressed.

  8. Sounds like the perfect, indulgent, girly day! 🙂

    1. Absolutely! Gotta have more of those!

  9. You lucky lady!! Sounds like you had a ball! And inspiration overload too! 🙂

    1. Yes, overload! I guess you can tell by all the photos and video! 😄

  10. Lucky you to have such a great trip out, and how wonderful is your sister? I am going to have to have a word with mine.
    Thanks for sharing.

    1. Haha! Yes have a word with your sister! You’re welcome! I love to share !

  11. Thats a nice treat! 🙂

  12. Wow! That must have been beyond thrilling. And you, in your own self-designed outfit, perhaps you’ll be featured one day in a fashion show? Must have been enormous fun for you and your sister. Thanks for taking us along!

    1. It was exciting! I unfortunately have the wrong education and background to be in the fashion industry, but that won’t stop me from learning and trying and blogging as much as I can – since I enjoy it so much!

  13. I finally got around to catching up with your adventure. It looks like you had a great time. Love your outfit, you look smashing. Being that close to the catwalk must have been exciting. So, you may have to go again next year.

    1. Thanks we did have a great time. It was fun! It is tempting to go again!

  14. I loved this post! I want hair like the Gabrielab models and I want to learn how to walk in 8 inch heels with my shoulders thrown back….and not fall over!

    1. It certainly is quite a talent! It was such a fun evening!
