No mistletoe, just a Christmas tree.

My sister suggested I use mistletoe as a prop in my next blog photo session.  Sorry sis, I have no mistletoe, but I do have a Christmas tree and my finished DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER Copy!

I decided in the beginning of the year that I wanted to copy this Designer Original top.

Ellery Neu

and this Designer Original skirt.

Chloe

I would have to alter these patterns, McCall’s M6896 and New Look 6433, and I did so in these posts here, here and here.  I added a bell shape to the sleeves of the top and did not put in the back zipper (unfortunately I am not sure if that was the best decision!)  I also had to add the decorative zipper to the skirt.

I am quite pleased with my Designer Copy except for … well … the top.  I made the top a bit bigger and not as form fitting as the pattern instructed so that I could pull it over my head and not need the zipper in the back to get it on.  I think I might have sacrificed too much of the fit for that.  I think I might make the necessary alterations to my top and put in the zipper instead.  I always like to let these ideas sit for a while though, just to be sure.

The skirt, on the other hand, I really like.  The Bamberg lining feels devine and gives the skirt a heavy feel and a lovely drape.

Elle Gee Makes has finished her Designer Copy too!  She has copied a Missoni Boho Poncho.  Head on over to her blog for the details – part of the process required a crochet hook and many episodes of Gilmore Girls!

  1. Merry Christmas Linda! I love the zip in that skirt, I may have to copy that idea!

    1. You know, I never thought of having a skirt zip until I saw it on the model! It’s a neat idea!

  2. Fabulous! I like your colour combination even better than the original. Have a wonderful Christmas time.

  3. Looks great.
    Not participating just following along.

    1. Thank you! I hope you getting in some sewing and some relaxation in these busy days ahead!

  4. Fabulous skirt and such festive photos! Love the side zipper and the contrast fabric. It’s just like the Chloe original. I never would have thought to do that. Thanks for the shout out on my poncho, too.

    1. Thank you! I’m glad I discovered the zipper idea. And I love to share sewing stories and projects – so if there is anyone else out there, just let me know! I’ll be happy to include you!

  5. Really love the skirt and you look fabulous x

  6. The Designin’ December challenge has really made you make something beautiful. Great combination. The asymmetrical look of the skirt is very well done and the zipper is a great detail. Wishing you and your family a wonderful Christmas time and the best (sewing) wishes for 2017.

    1. Thank you very much! It seems I love a challenge – sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t – but it’s all fun! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family too!

  7. I love that skirt – it looks fantastic! Hope you have a great Christmas and new year 🎄🎄

    1. Thank you! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too!

  8. Love the skirt! It looks great on you!

    1. Thank you! Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to you!

  9. Wow you look very elegant. Every time I come visit here I want to grab my older (not vintage) machine and make something nice but my hands just won’t cooperate and then I think “maybe it is time to take my sister fabric shopping again, she’s got nothing to do anyway”. Just kidding you but you do look Devine. Merry Christmas and I will see you in the new year.

    1. Well considering I am working on your last lot of fabric, as soon as that sun starts shining again, I think it will be time for another trip to the fabric store – my kind of heaven! Thank you for always reading and commenting… Merry Christmas and see you in the New Year!

  10. That looks really cool–the red with the plaid. Both outfits look nice to me. I do the same thing when I’m undecided how to do a piece with my art. I think about it for a bit usually on the bus to and from work. Merry Christmas and you have a pretty tree.

    1. Thank you! Marry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family too!

  11. What a gorgeous outfit. I loved the inspiration garments and your copies are fabulous. I especially love the skirt with the zip in. What a cool look. Xx

    1. Thank you! I think I am going to adjust the fit on the top and put the zipper in like the pattern instructed. The “pull over your head” look is too baggy! That’s ok… Live and learn!

  12. Your top and skirt look lovely…as does the tree by the way. I notice the cat is eyeing it with malevolent intent, the tree I mean, not the top and skirt!

    1. Thank you! Yes, I have a good grip on Sophie!
