WHAT IS THE DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER CHALLENGE?

We have all seen something we LOVE either in the stores, online or on the runways, but don’t actually want to buy for some reason.  So I propose that we sew that garment that we see/want.  Now if you are lucky and you already have an exact pattern, either an indie pattern, your own self-drafted, or a “Big 4” pattern, that you can use – then go for it!  If you have to alter a pattern that you already have, or draft your own pattern, you can do that too.  Whatever works for you.  Let’s make what we see and want!

Show us your Designer Original photo and how you put together your Designer me-made COPY.

“Why buy when you can make it yourself – better and for less money?”

  1. I want to join in this year! already picked my outfit. Now searching for the fabrics to make it. Gee this has to be the hardest part of this challenge.

Looking forward to see what others are making 🙂

    1. Glad to have you with us Simona – I always have sewing ideas in my head and ALWAYS have one hard to find notion, fabric or piece! Good luck with your search!

  2. Hmm I like challenges- but the trouble is I never bother to look at designer wear, let alone covet it! I may just watch from the sidelines!

    1. Watching from the sidelines is always fun too! 😎We do have one sewist though who usually enters and copies a design from the vintage years, like the 30’s, 40’s or 50’s. So that’s certainly allowed. She has the year, the designer, and a photo – like a museum piece. If those eras are of more interest to you, join in!

      1. oooh then maybe something Victorian lol

        1. I think so! Isn’t fashion timeless? I consider fashion over time to be quite educational – show us something vintage that we don’t see every day! 😁👍

  3. What fabulous sponsors! Thank you for organising Linda, and I’m definitely thinking about this.

    1. It would be lovely to have you join in, Sue! Your Designer me-made Copy was perfect last year!

  4. I am in, again (-; It was fun last year!

    1. Nice to see you again! I’ll be watching for your Designer me-made Copy!

      1. I am doing research as we speak…

  5. My entry is in the mulling-over- with-possibilities stage.Looking forward to it!

    1. Love that! “Mulling over-with-possibilities”. I’m there quite often! 😁👍

  6. I have an outfit selected that is practical for me to accomplish and to wear. It’s more of a spring look and that’s just fine by me.

    1. That’s perfect! No point in making something you won’t wear!

  7. Right, I’m in, and have started my ball rolling with a blog post https://thedementedfairy.wordpress.com/2017/10/25/cape-fhere/

    1. That was quick! Did you mention DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER? I’ll have to go have a read … after work!

  8. Having watched from the sidelines before, I’m going to give this a go this year! I have already spotted a great Designer Original, just have to figure out how on earth I’m going to be able to create it based on only one photo! I knew there was a reason why I turn garments inside out when I’m in shops. I never buy them, just want to know how they were made!

    1. I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with! Well at least with only one photo, none of us can say what it’s “supposed” to look like! 😂 Great tip – that’s a good way to learn and discover how garments are put together!

  9. This is a really cool event, Linda. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s creations. Very happy to donate a prize too.

    1. It is fun watching what everyone comes up with! Thank you for your donation!

  10. I would love joining this designin’ December challenge. I’m working on a designer copy right now. Sounds like fun.

    1. Glad to have you join us and looking forward to seeing what you come up with! I noticed you on the Facebook group too! 😁👍🎉💃🕺🎊

  11. Ooh I’m glad this is until end of December! I am planning to make my first coat – hopefully I can get it done in time!! I at least have all my supplies 🙂

    1. Yes, there’s lots of time. I like to round out the end of the year with a lovely outfit, so DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER is it! Voting is right away in January!

  12. just re-read the rules- is there a start date? ie no sewing til December?

    1. No start-sewing date. Some people complained (gently) that sewing in December was impossible. You can sew and post anytime referring DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER and nicedressthanksimadeit.com. I will repost your Designer me-made Copies in December on my blog and other social media. We vote first post in January. Sorry if I was confusing in my rules. I quite often am confused! 🤪😂 So ready, set, sew anytime!

      1. woohoo! I may have more than one entry, hope that’s OK- had some ideas today

        1. Gosh! You’re just blasting right through this aren’t you! Putting me to shame! 😂 I did just tell a sewist somewhere on social media “one prize per sewist/winner”, which basically means pick your “winner” Designer me-made Copy for the Challenge! I suggested that if she makes a jacket and a skirt, two things, one entry, for example, it would be a grand submission to have the whole outfit. Have fun with it!

  13. I’m in & really excited!

    1. That’s great! Nice to have you back again!

  14. This looks like so much fun! I’d love to enter but I think I may have left it a bit too late – maybe I’ll start preparing inspiration, etc, for next year!

Also, this will probably sound like the dumbest question ever, but do you have to have a Facebook account to enter?

    1. That’s okay! You’re welcome to stick around and watch! No you do not need Facebook to enter. Although I am everywhere, I will be collecting votes on a poll on my blog and likes on Instagram. You can enter on my blog by letting me know you’re in and then where/when you’ve got photos up or enter on IG #designindecember or on both to double your chances. (And no question is ever dumb) 😁👍

      1. Thank you so much for letting me know – and for saying it wasn’t a dumb question! 😀 I’m still thinking about pushing myself to enter this year, but I’m going to have to think a bit first and do some planning, see if it would be possible to pull it off before the 31st! Even if I don’t end up entering this year, I’ll be checking out the other entries and keeping up with things for sure!!

        1. That’s great! Enjoy the “fashion show”! 😁

  15. I will join in Linda. Via Instagram @marjoriesews

    1. Glad to have you join us! I will go over and make sure I’m following you too!

  16. Hi Linda! I’d like to join too, please! 🙂 This is so much fun, and such creative entries already!

    1. You’re very welcome! I’ll go over to your blog and have a look. I’ll be reposting tonight!

  17. Hurray! I’m still on time 🙂 My entry is up on the blog with mentions to the Designin’ December challenge! This dress was one of the greatest sewing accomplishments of 2017. It looks just like the original, and fits me perfectly!

    1. I’ve seen it on Instagram. You did a FABULOUS job! I’ll go take a look see and repost it here with the others! 🎉🕺💃🎊
