I finished my dress!

Well … actually my sister’s dress – part of my “Sister’s Sewing Project”.  It’s a border print and I’ve fallen in love with it.  Border print fabric is not easy to find!

My sister wanted this dress – she took this photo from the TV!  It was her inspiration.

Nice dress! Thanks, I made it!!

And she found a lovely border print fabric for it – 100% cotton.

Nice dress! Thanks, I made it!!

I pulled this pattern from my stash – Butterick B6089.  (It’s difficult to see in this photo because of the camera flash on the plastic cover – sorry!)

Nice dress! Thanks, I made it!!

I finished most of my sister’s dress a few posts ago, if you would like to see the details look here.

All that was left was to sew in the neck facing, sew these pieces together, put in the zipper and hem everything up.

Barbie, my Singer “Rocketeer” did a FAB job sewing evenly through all the layers of the box pleats – I even tried out my Singer even feed foot, it worked like a charm!

The facing was a snap.

Putting in the zipper was fun as the bottom of it had to be sewn into the box pleat.  I seemed to muddle through it alright though, pinning down the box pleat and sewing through all layers of it to insert my zipper.

TA DA!  Like I said … I finally finished my dress!  LOL!  (I can’t wait until my sister’s next visit so I can actually see it on a real body!)

Isn’t that the prettiest thing you have ever seen?

So … does anyone have any idea where I can get my hands on more border print for a dress for myself?

Happy Sewing!

  1. That’s a beautiful dress and really does justice to the border print.

    1. Thank you! My sister picked out the perfect fabric. It doesn’t always work out that well!

  2. Very pretty!! You did an excellent job and I’m sure your sister will be thrilled! 🙂

    1. Thank you! Yes, she’s a happy customer … she keeps coming back for more! (Which is fine because she gives me fabric in return!). 😁👍

      1. NICE! 🙂 I haven’t sewn dresses or any clothes for my sisters yet, but I have been sewing a lot for my sister’s daughter, who just turned five. She’s getting a couple of dresses for Christmas this year and probably a few dolls as well. 🙂 Sewing for family feels really nice. But a little high stress at times, wanting to get it right and not make too many mistakes!

Your sister must love having such a talented dressmaker for a sister! 😉 You really are incredibly talented!!

        1. You are too kind with your words, especially since after about the third skirt I made way back when, we stuck a deal that she could buy me fabric in return for my services. Everyone leaves happy! 😂 Sewing clothes for a five year old would be quite fun. I’ve sewn a few things for my children when they were small and the fabrics I used were always colourful. Are you going to post these little dresses?

          1. That’s a really good deal to make! Especially since fabric is so incredibly costly most of the times these days!

I posted one of the little dresses a few weeks ago here: https://theprettyandthekitsch.wordpress.com/2017/10/12/a-little-christmas-dress/ 🙂

I should really post the first dress I made her, but I blanked while adding the facing and did it completely wrong! LOL. My niece will probably love it anyway, but it’s a bit of an embarrassing mistake to have made, and I don’t have any more of the fabric left to correct it. I learned a lesson from that dress though, that’s for sure! It won’t be a mistake I’ll be repeating!

I’d love to see the clothes you sewed for your children!!

            1. I’ll have to go take a look. Thanks for the link. We all make mistakes and some even post about them! I sewed for my kids probably 20 years ago, pre-blogging, pre-pretty much everything! 😂

              1. You’re welcome! And thanks, it’s always reassuring to know that I’m not the only one who makes mistakes while sewing!

I bet the clothes you sewed for your children were adorable!! It must have made you so happy to see them wearing them!

              2. Little clothes are so cute! That’s a cute dress you made too! 😁👍

              3. Aw! Thank you!! 🙂 I love making little clothes. 🙂

  3. That is such a pretty print. Way to go. You and Barbie made a lovely dress.

    1. Thank you! You know it’s a bit nerve racking when you have your sister’s hard earned money sitting in one hand and a pair of scissors in the other! 😂

  4. Gorgeous! The border is perfect! And Barbie certainly seems up to the task, as do you. Lucky sister, she will certainly enjoy wearing her beautiful new dress. 😀

    1. Thank you! Border print always makes something plain, special.

  5. What an utterly gorgeous dress. I bet that your sister will be truly delighted with it once she sees it. The print is lovely and it is so beautifully made. I am afraid that I don’t have any resources for border prints. I love them but never seem to find them when I am out and about. Good luck in your search. Xx

    1. Thank you for the kind words! My sister grabbed it in an instant! Hopefully my search will be as lucky!

  6. The dress is really pretty. Great combination of pattern and fabric!

I bought a couple of batik border prints from SewBatik. They had a booth at the sewing expo in the spring so I was able to touch and feel the quality. I also purchased two ITY border prints from Fabric Mart Fabrics earlier in the year. Of course they wouldn’t work for this style of dress, but for something simple they are just right.

    1. Thanks for the compliments… and the tips! I will keep scouting around.

  7. What a fantastic fabric choice! I love the pattern placement – it’s so beautiful. Happy sewing a lot!

  8. And once again one happy customer is dying to try on her new dress. It looks wonderful. Thanks sis.

    1. Glad you like it! It looked pretty on you when it was in pieces, pinned together. Can’t wait to see what it looks like now.

  9. What a wonderful use of this border print. Lucky sister!

    1. Yes, my sister made a good fabric choice! 😍

  10. Beautiful and stylish dress. The border is such a wonderful detail.

    1. Thank you! My sister made an excellent choice. Border prints really make a big difference and we were lucky to find this one!

  11. Nice job. I’m sure your sister will be thrilled. Excellent use of the border print. The design makes great use of the fabric.
