Are you ready for DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER 2018?

Have you picked out your Designer Original and the fabric you need to make your Designer me-made COPY?  Or are you just in the planning stages – don’t worry … there’s lots of time to sew before DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER 2018!

Ever since the first DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER (2015) I’ve seen many fabulous garments in stores, magazines, online, on social media, on runways … so many beautiful garments!  And I say,

“Why buy when you can make it yourself – better and for less money?”

I’ve seen plenty of fabulous Designer Originals, like this dress from Oscar de la Renta Fall 2018.

Nice dress! Thanks, I made it!!

Which led me to this tunic and trousers, again Oscar de la Renta Fall 2018 … which I want so bad!  Perhaps not in pink (I’m not a pink type of girl!) and perhaps with a tunic that is a bit shorter (so I don’t look stumpy!) and perhaps with sleeves a bit shorter too (so they don’t get caught in the filing cabinets at work).  Where AM I going with this?

Nice dress! Thanks, I made it!!

Well, it looks like I’ve found my Designer Original to copy for DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER 2018!

I could recreate this Designer Original tunic with this Vogue pattern, V9206, if I decided on the length I wanted and made the sleeve ends with an elastic ruffle instead of a band.

Nice dress! Thanks, I made it!!

This would be a good choice for my Designer me-made trousers, McCall’s M6361.  Of course, I can’t see the waistband on the trousers the model is wearing – so I have a bit of freedom with what I can’t see.

Nice dress! Thanks, I made it!!

I found my fabric for my Designer me-made trousers recently.   A Kelly Green Galaxy Twill – 65% polyester 35% cotton.  I don’t have much green in my wardrobe.  I think it’s time to change that!

Nice dress! Thanks, I made it!!

Of course, I could have taken the easy way out and found a fabric for my Designer me-made tunic that was a light colour with a black print.  Or is that even possible?  Instead I found this green satin.  (I prefer the non-shiny side.)  Unfortunately, I don’t know the fabric content because I was in too much of a hurry to grab it!

Nice dress! Thanks, I made it!!

At the same time I grabbed this embroidered sheer.  I think it’s time I learned how to appliqué!  There are perhaps 6 birds and lots of vines and flowers on this piece I bought.  A few to practice with and a few for my Designer me-made tunic!

Nice dress! Thanks, I made it!!

Now of course, just in case I mess up really, really bad, I also bought this ready made black appliqué.  I leave nothing to chance!

Nice dress! Thanks, I made it!!

And I bought some “Heat n Bond”, although I’ve never used it before – but there is nothing wrong with learning something new.

Nice dress! Thanks, I made it!!

I ran across this Oscar de la Renta blouse and this Sew Over It Pussy Bow Blouse came to mind.  Who needs to spend $2,053.83 CA for a blouse?

“Why buy when you can make it yourself – better and for less money?”

  1. December?!! Already?!! Ok now that I’m over the shock of realizing we’re heading into fall and winter I’m looking forward to seeing your tunic. I love tunics, they’re so comfortable to wear, And I love the 6 birds and vines applique.

    1. Don’t fret! It’s not December yet! But we do need a lot of advance warning for decisions to be made, materials purchased, and garments to be sewn. Thanks for the compliment. I’m hoping what’s in my head plays out in my finished garment.

  2. Wow, only September, but you’re so right. I love your Oscar de la Renta choices, they’re very glamorous. I think I have a make in mind, but it is ambitious and I have a ton of stuff I want to make before then. What to do?

    1. It’s a real conundrum! 😂 (Gosh that’s such a lovely word!)

  3. I am just about finished the drapes Linda helped me figure out and that was a full time project for me. As I am not a sewist I look forward to seeing all your beautiful choices. Your choice is great and the appliques look fun.

    1. Thanks Rose! Remember if you have questions, just ask!

  4. Your selection for Designin’ DEcember is beautiful! Can hardly wait to see your finished look.

    1. Thank you! The appliqué will be something new for me! 😁

  5. Here’s a trip down memory lane, when I graduated, I wore a long light blue skirt, with a black belt and the lace ruffled blouse was a from an Oscar de la Renta pattern. I didn’t sew it. So who did? You? Rose? There were 2 blouse patterns and I loved them both. I also like the tunic blouse you showed.

    1. I remember that pattern now. I don’t remember sewing it though. You looked so stylish! Now I can’t remember sewing it… maybe I’m getting senile? 😂

      1. Must have been you Linda. I remember sewing her wedding dress but not grad. I remember seeing pictures of her skirt and blouse, they were very beautiful.

        1. They were beautiful. I don’t know who sewed it up!

  6. I’d definitely love to participate again this year and have a project in mind, but am still in the process of hunting down a pattern and the fabric! Fingers crossed I can find everything I need in time! 🙂

    1. Glad to have you join in! I’ve given lots of notice but Good Luck to everyone searching! And remember, for anyone reading, Vintage Designer fashion is allowed too!

  7. You are on the ball Linda! 🙂 I need to think fast.. hahahah Thanks for the prompt.

  8. Whoa – I just got back from vacation and saw this post! What a jolt back to reality – – December seems so far away but you’re right. It’s not! Time to get my Designer copy mo-jo on!

    1. 😂😂😂 I always love advance warning myself!! 😁👍

  9. You might consider learning to applique on something with a tighter weave than chiffon. I have done a reasonable amount of applique and I dont think I would approach chiffon.

    1. Yes it probably will be quite the challenge making this garment. I am determined to get something sewn on this top, even if it is the store bought appliqué sewn on carefully by hand! We shall see how this turns out!
