Well it is Friday night and I am exhausted, but happy! ย Exhausted because it was a busy work week and happy because I got to wear MY NEW COAT to work all week. ย It was wonderful, not too hot and not too cold, but juuuust RIGHT! (I sound like Goldilocks and I am not even blond!)
I was very happy when my co-workers said…. “Oh did you get a new coat?” ย “Yes, I did.” ย “It’s nice, where did you get it?” ย “I made it!” ๐
So here it is…
It is made of a dark grey wool Melton with McCalls M6657. ย As I said before I did not like that the pattern did not have a back neck facing or lining, so I pieced those together myself. ย Otherwise, it was a simple pattern to make!
I was afraid my sewing machine, a Janome 3160QDC, wouldn’t be able to go through 4 layers of the fabric but with the right needle, thread and some slow sewing, it made it through.
I also knew I wouldn’t be able to sew the belt as the pattern instructed… I was supposed to sew it together with the right sides together first and then turn it inside out and top stitch it… So I just did this…
I pinned and held the belt together as it was supposed to look finished, seams folded in, then I top stitched it together and I was done. ย It was just easier to do it that way with such heavy material. ย I certainly wouldn’t be able to “turn it inside out”!
Oh, just in case you noticed, the material in the sewing machine is different than the belt Dolly is wearing. ย Why? ย Well the “leather” belt was too stiff so I made one with the grey Melton. ย It was just right (Goldilocks, again!), until I lifted my arms to put my scarf on and my belt and coat slid up to my ribs and never came back down! ย I tugged and tugged at it all around with no luck. ย Finally I just undid the belt on my ribs and was able to get my coat down again! ย A funny sight! ย I am obviously not meant to wear the belt!
Finishing work. ๐
The warm quilted inside lining…
… ย and the cozy hidden pockets.
Next? ย I think it is a tough decision between sewing some of those shirts I have already cut out (one of them is in a mystery size as I was distracted and made a boo boo!)ย OR cutting a couple of T shirtsย and pants out of some knit material I have. ย I really really want to dive into sewing knits again (a story for another blog)… Hmm…
Stay tuned!
