“Why buy when you can make it yourself – better and for less money?”

For an incredibly long time I have been disappointed with the choices, quality and sizing of ready-to-wear.  For years now my idea of shopping, online or in the stores, is to browse or fondle and get ideas for what I can make for myself.

RTW just doesn’t stand up to Handmade anymore.  The landfills are full of unwanted clothes.  Now I am hearing of textiles that are treated with chemicals (why?) before they are made into RTW fashions.  (What is happening here?)

So now we have the DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER Challenge – find something you like, a Designer Original, and COPY it.  Let’s see your Designer me-made Copy!

Here are our DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER Challengers, in no particular order:

Who do you think was most successful in making a Designer me-made COPY of their DESIGNER ORIGINAL?  Let’s pick the DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER 2017 WINNERS.

The top five Challengers in this poll will win one of the 10 randomly selected prizes – the other five random prizes will be given to the top five Challengers in the #designindecember Instagram vote.  You might see some entries in both places, on the blog and on Instagram, but it will still be one prize per sewist.

Poll results will be hidden.  The winner will be announced in 1 week, after the poll closes Monday, January 8, 2017.

I want to say “Thank you” to our generous DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER SPONSORS!

Now for the voting:

NOTE:  With the Instagram vote, I am going to re-post each of the 35 Designer me-made Copies again separately and in no particular order – so please wait until you see them all before you vote.

HOLD ON!  You couldn’t get your sewing and posting done before the DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER 2017 deadline?  Let me know and I’ll include you in DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER 2018!  (Yes, I will be back again next year!  Will you?)

REMEMBER: Just by participating in DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER you are already a WINNER because you have a Designer me-made Copy – better and for less!

Good luck!

  1. What a hard choice. A few really put a lot of thought and work into making authentic copies. Then again some were very loosely inspired by the originals. I tried to pick one I thought was true to the original, and the maker looked good in her copy. After all even if it is very similar to the original, it should look good on you, and that is the point of sewing your own designer creations.

    1. Exactly! Some people pick something Designer that looks good on them and some people pick something Designer and change it to look good on them. I am happy to start with a Designer Original and end up looking good and feeling happy! Thanks for participating!

  2. Thank you for hosting this wonderful challenge Linda. I keep taking photos of designer outfits but never quite get round to making them, this was just the push I needed!

    1. You’re welcome Sue! Thank you for participating! Save your photos and get an early start on next year! 😁👍🎉💃🕺🎊

      1. Oh yes, I could, except I need pressure to perform!

        1. One of those students who left her studying to the last minute, I think!😂

  3. I think they are all number 1!!! So hard to choose one – I would have to do a random drawer out of a hat!

    1. Yes, I would too! That’s what I’m passing the voting responsibility on to the audience and Challengers, etc. I’m a chicken 🐓 😂

  4. It was such a great challenge and thank you for hosting it. Good luck to all the participants.

  5. all such wonderful makes – impossible to pick – very talented makers

  6. I do not vote in this sort of thing since I think all did a great job and I can’t figure any fair way to commend everyone if I vote for only one or a few. I might just give each person a nice even if small prize from among the goodies and wish them all the best. Heck, I do wish them all the best and think they did marvels!

    1. It’s a very difficult decision isn’t it! They are all excellent sewists and made lovely garments!

  7. Very difficult to pick just one but I’ve done it. What a high standard!

    1. Yes, the number and quality of Designer me-made Copies just gets better every year!

  8. They have all won already – just look a what they now have available to wear 😀. Well done to them all. One of these years I will actually get something made for this rather than just planned.

    1. 😁👍 I’ve said so myself, they are already ahead because they made something they wanted! Don’t forget you can get an early start. Designer me-made Copies don’t have to be made in December. I will just post in December for voting. 🎉🕺💃🎊

  9. So many choices…..but I eventually managed to narrow it down to what I regard as the ‘best’ – although all are really good. As you say, it doesn’t matter who wins or not – everyone’s a winner!

    1. Agreed! Thank you for participating!
