Designin’ December 2019 – MORE Prize Sponsors!

Guess what I’ve decided? As you might know from this post here, I have four patterns to choose from to make my Designer Copy of my Designer Original – I am inspired by this Holly Fulton Spring/Summer 2015 Ready to Wear …

… and I think the best choice out of my four patterns is this one …

Sure I have to make a few changes. The shoulders in this pattern have some contrasting pieces inserted, and the dress itself is a bit too straight and too short, but I think I can make it work!

I am absolutely in love with my fabrics. I will make the sides the “blush” fabric, along with the shoulder yokes … for now anyway. I have lots of fabric so I can play with the shape of the shoulder yokes to see if I can get mine the same as the Designer Original. The centres of the dress will be this jade green/blush paisley … that should take care of the colour blocking. I had a heck of a time when tracing my pattern pieces … I forgot how to spell “shoulder”! 🙂

I had to chose which part of the paisley design I wanted for the centre in the front and back of my dress. Once I decided on the front, I cut the back on the same design line. Looking at these photos now, I’m hoping I don’t end up with some unfortunate pattern placement!

I widened each of my centre pieces and my side pieces gradually from the waist down to the bottom of the dress to increase the hemline by 3 1/2″ to 4″. Hopefully that adds in some fullness at the bottom!

When it came to the length of the dress, I didn’t want my dress flowing to the floor. I’d hardly be able to survive on a double decker bus (yes we have them in Victoria, Canada) or in the office. I’d be tripping all over myself!

I did remember Sew Nip Tuck’s post here. She found an article called “Mathematician plots formula for making legs look great”. Ahem … so I followed the formula to find my “golden number” … then I added on a few inches to be on the safe side because my golden number sounded a few inches too short! We shall see when I finish whether I stick to my golden number or not!

I think I’m all set to sew now! Of course, during all this shifting of fabric, cutting and deep thinking, Simon got bored, but moving on …

WHAT IS THE DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER CHALLENGE?

We have all seen something we LOVE, either in the stores, online or on the runways, but don’t actually want to buy for some reason.  So I propose that we sew that garment that we see/want.  Now if you are lucky and you already have an exact pattern – either an indie pattern, your own self-drafted pattern, or a “Big 4” pattern, that you can use – then go for it!  If you have to alter a pattern that you already have, or draft your own pattern, you can do that too.  Whatever works for you.  Let’s make what we see and want!  (Remember Vintage Designer fashion is allowed too!)  Good luck in your search!  😁👍

Show us your Designer Original photo and how you put together your Designer me-made COPY.

“Why buy when you can make it yourself – better and for less money?”
