“Why buy when you can make it yourself – better and for less money?”

My daughter did one of those quizzes on Facebook – “Do you know your mother?”  One of the questions was:  What does your mother usually like to wear?  Her answer:  Anything she has sewed.  She knows me well.

For an incredibly long time I have been disappointed with the choices, quality and sizing of ready-to-wear.  Now my idea of shopping, online or in the stores, is to browse or fondle and get ideas on what I can make for myself.

RTW just doesn’t stand up to Handmade anymore.  I made my husband a coat over 25 years ago … he only just gave it up as it was worn out.  (I guess I will have to make him another.)  How many RTW garments do you have that have endured over 25 years?  The landfills are full of broken clothes.

Handmade can be intricate in fabric and design, or a basic style with a simple fabric.  Handmade can be made to fit.  It’s all in your power!

So now we have the DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER Challenge – find something you like, a Designer Original, and COPY it.

Here are our DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER Challengers, in no particular order, with blog links:

Who do you think was most successful in making a COPY of their DESIGNER ORIGINAL?  Let’s pick the DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER 2016 WINNER, and along with the Title, her prize will be this “Five in One Sliding Gauge” and these water soluble pencil markers.

Poll results will be hidden until the winner is announced.  The polls will be open until Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 12:00 midnight (PST).  One vote per person on WordPress and ONE LIKE per follower on Instagram.  On Instagram I am going to post each of the 10 photos separately – so wait until they are all on and then make your ONE LIKE.

HOLD ON!  You didn’t make the deadline?  Let me know when your DESIGNER COPY is completed (anytime during 2017!) with a comment on my blog or hashtag it #DESIGNINDECEMBER on Twitter and/or Instagram and I will share it on my blog anyway.  I’ll be saving your DESIGNER COPIES throughout 2017, for the DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER 2017 CHALLENGE!

REMEMBER: Just by participating in DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER you are already a WINNER because you have a Designer Original – better and for less money!

  3. I’ve cast my vote. I’m glad you’re running it next year. Got a skirt I’m copying at the minute. I’ll share it with you when I’m done. Love looking at the makes x

    1. That’s great! If you make a Designer COPY, link to me and mention DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER 2017 in your blog post and on Twitter and Instagram hashtag it #DESIGNINDECEMBER – then I will save it in my file for DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER 2017! 🎉💃🎊

      1. Great! It is a designer copy. I saw it in an magazine and I am obsessively copying it! Yes, I will do! Thanks. 😁

  5. Wow! It was really hard to pick just one out of those great entries. But I finally managed to cast my ballot. Looking forward to seeing who wins. Have a great new year Linda!

    1. Thanks for voting! Have a Happy New Year Susan on the Soapbox! 🎉💃🎊

  6. About to vote Linda, it’s been fun to join in again, so thanks for having the idea and organising! Looking forward to seeing it grow even more next year. For me it’s a great way to make me make something that I might put off till later? So never. In fact I’ve just reused the pattern I made for last year in a new fabric! ALSO You may be the host, but you should have included your make in the vote?? Why not, it was great and you wore it? Have a happy 2017!

    1. It was fun for me to organize! I look forward to doing it again! I’m so glad you did your pattern up again, it was fabulous! 🎊💃🎉 I like sewing according to the Challenge and seeing everyone else sew according to the Challenge, but I prefer to just be one example of what the DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER Challenge is and let others go for the VOTE! I thank you for participating – that’s what makes it all so entertaining!

  7. Well, that was not an easy choice, but I’ve voted! Grand idea to carry this out through 2017, I think my idea will come to fruition at some point with 12 months to work it up! 😉 Look forward to seeing who is the winner, good luck ladies!

    1. Thanks for voting! They are all lovely, aren’t they? I’ll be watching for your Designer Copy through 2017! 🎉💃🎊

      1. It was a difficult choice, to be sure. A little hint about mine….it will be white. 🙂

          1. Haha! No weddings that I know of. My “through-the-year DesigninDecember” inspiration is white, so if you see a white WIP, that’s it! 😉

            1. Opps! I mis-spoke! ☺️ I’ll be watching for it!

  8. Not easy to choose from those fabulous offerings. Well done to them all!

  9. I’ve done the poll. It was very hard to choose – great series.

  10. Wish that I could vote for everybody. They are all great. Good luck, ladies! Xx

    1. We are welcome to have you join! Find a Designer Original, usually sewists pick something they want but would never buy, make a Designer Copy and leave a comment on my blog that you are finished. You can hashtag it #DESIGNINDECEMBER on Twitter or Instagram. I will share them all on my blog, etc. in DESIGNIN’ DECEMBER 2017 so everyone can enjoy what other’s have made!

      1. Im checking the internet for dresses now that I want to make..so excited!

        1. That’s great! You will be done before everyone else at this rate! Done before DESIGNIN’ DECMEBER even!
