I learned something …

… even though there really wasn’t much sewing this last week.  There was a lot of reading and exercising, but not much sewing. I did learn something though!

I participated in the “Makers for Fashion Revolution” daily themes organized by @inthefolds on Instagram.  The daily themes made me think seriously about Fashion Revolution Week (April 23 – 29th).  Some of the daily themes were easy to interpret and display on my Instagram @nicedressthanksimadeit, for example:  “I made my clothes”.  Other daily themes took a lot of thought, for example:  “Natural Fibres”.  As soon as I saw that one, I realized that, although I know the names of many fabrics, I do not know how most are made or which ones are really “sustainable”!

I researched and found a couple of interesting articles on “1 Million Women” and “The Guardian“. Continue reading

Filling the Gaps! (and catching up on my #mmmay15)

Oh the weather was so lovely today!  I just couldn’t sit down to post!  🙂  But the sun is fading now so let’s talk…

When I cleaned up (and out) my closet, I realized that I had some gaps in my wardrobe – last weekend I finished my black top and this weekend my red.  I still think I could use a solid blue one, but I am not sure that I have a solid blue fabric in my stash.  I did have the solid black and solid red that I used!  Lucky!  Stash busting! A SHOUT OUT TO MARY ANN! (and my #mmmay15)

A few days ago I was speaking with Mary Ann, the accountant at our office, about the “world” of sewing and sewing blogs.  She asked me how I started and I told her that for about a year before I started blogging, I was just a sewing blog stalker.  Then I felt bad only clicking and reading and I thought it was about time I joined the party.

After more discussion, I confessed to Mary Ann that my technique is simple – just babble away about sewing and always write thinking I am having a conversation with my sisters.  Well, Mary Ann gave me the best “hurt” look she could muster and said “You mean you aren’t writing for me?”  Umm…  Ok…  Yes!  So here’s my SHOUT OUT to my follower, Mary Ann!  This post’s for you!  (… and for my sisters, and for the clickers, the followers, the readers, and you, and you, and you, and you…)

Thank you! Continue reading

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle … Refashion? (and my #mmmay15)

In preparing for Me-Made-May’15, I discovered a few things when cleaning up my closet a few weeks ago.  Such as:

  • I still have the shoes that I wore to my wedding almost 27 years ago in a box in my closet.  I find that amazing for some reason.  I put them back safely.
  • I have clothes hanging in my closet that I don’t wear, good clothes – slightly used, but good.  Those have already been taken to my local charity/second-hand shop.
  • I also have a few dresses hanging in my closest that I don’t wear, but can’t part with, not many, just a few.  I have to do something with them.
  • And lastly, I have a few skirts that I cannot wear because I don’t have tops to match. After some thought, I decided that all it would take is sewing up a few simple tops in solid colours – a black, a red, and maybe a blue too.

I was ruthless …

… let me start at the beginning…

I, Linda of Nice dress! Thanks, I made it!! sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May ’15. I endeavour to wear one handmade item each day for the duration of May 2015. #mmmay15

I did this challenge for the first time last year and loved it! It was a stretch to make it through the month, but I got a good look at the “holes” in my handmade wardrobe.  This year I plan on filling those “holes”! Continue reading

Me-Made-May’14 the last post :(

The Last Post … I feel like there should be a Bugle Call in the background!

Monday, May 26 – something I made long ago, but still love today.  Very stylish with its princess seams, and very comfortable too!

image

Tuesday, May 27 –  a border print skirt I also made long ago.  It is so difficult to find border print now, but I still see it on the store mannequins.  Why isn’t there more of it in the fabric shops?  Maybe you can get it on-line?

image

Wednesday, May 28 – a summer-y dress for some summer-y weather we have been having.

image

Thursday, May 29 –   another summer-y dress.  Love this fabric!

image

Friday was the usual jeans and top at work.  Saturday and Sunday, yoga pants and T’s – very predictable!

That is it for this year!  I certainly have enjoyed going through my closet.  Apparently there is a definite lack of Me Made clothes to wear at home.  I am going to have to remedy that!  Also, I have on the list to conquer sewing myself a pair of jeans…  someday!

Stay tuned!

Me-Made-May’14 (4th post)

May 20th and I am still hanging in here!

My black skirt, a polyester that feels like velvet!

Nice dress! Thanks, I made it!!

My new favourite knit top!

May 22nd

It was a little cool for this one, but I wore a light black sweater with it.

May 23rd

Maybe this is cheating?  I added a Me Made infinity scarf (a light cotton) to my t shirt and jeans.

Pull out the casual clothes and let’s go get some groceries!

Me-Made-May’14 (3rd post)

My 3rd Me-Made-May’14 post and I’m still hanging in there!  How are you doing?

Monday, May 12 –  a knit skirt I made long ago.  Sophie has checked it out and given her approval.

image

Tuesday, May 13 – Along with my pea coat,  blogged here, my jean jacket is another favourite of mine!  I wore it for about an hour this morning, then the sun came out in full force and I had to take it off and carry it around.

image

Wednesday, May 14 – My skirt.  A lovely fabric, not knit, probably polyester, glad I grabbed it when I saw it!

image

I also wore this hand made necklace.  Not a Me-Made, but a purchase from a Christmas Craft Fair.  Apparently the lady crotchets them out of metallic ladder yarn.  Does anyone out there know how to do this?

image

Thursday, May 15 – my knit top, perfect for the hot weather we have been having.

Of course, Friday is Jeans day at work.  Saturday and Sunday are usually even more casual – yoga pants and T’s.  Monday is a holiday here, so even more casual clothes.  There will be lots of time to relax and sew this weekend!

Just a thought – It seems most of my Me-Made’s are for the office.  This all makes me wonder what I would be sewing for myself if I worked from home?  Would I then have a massive collection of T’s, jeans and yoga pants?  Do you live in T’s, jeans and yoga pants too? Or do you sew and wear a variety of things?  What do you sew up the most?
